The First Uncrewed Mission Will Test The Complete Flight System
Gaganyaan is intended to demonstrate India’s ability to send astronauts into orbit and return them safely. Before carrying a crew, ISRO will conduct a sequence of uncrewed missions to validate the vehicle, spacecraft, life-support, communication and recovery systems under operational conditions.
The first uncrewed experimental mission is targeted for October–December 2026. It will carry Vyommitra, a half-humanoid developed to monitor conditions and interact with spacecraft systems during the flight.
Two further uncrewed missions are targeted by 2027. These will use the configuration planned for the first crewed flight, enabling ISRO to test the integrated system before astronauts are placed onboard. The Rajya Sabha reply does not specify a date for the human orbital mission.
Launch, Crew And Safety Systems Have Reached Key Test Stages
Development and ground testing have been completed for the propulsion stages and structures of the Human Rated Launch Vehicle Mark-3. Propulsion systems for the Crew Module and Service Module have also been developed, tested and qualified.
Other systems developed and tested include:
the Environmental Control and Life Support System;
the Crew Module’s thermal protection;
parachutes and other deceleration systems;
the mechanism that restores the module to an upright position after landing; and
end-to-end avionics.
Crew safety is being tested separately from the complete orbital mission. The TV-D1 Test Vehicle Mission validated the Crew Escape System during flight, while two air-drop tests using a simulated Crew Module tested its deceleration and landing sequence. Preparations are underway for the next Test Vehicle Mission, TV-D2.
Ground Infrastructure And Recovery Systems Are Being Prepared
The programme requires facilities and operational systems beyond the spacecraft itself. ISRO has established:
an Orbital Module Preparation Facility;
the Gaganyaan Control Centre;
a dedicated Crew Training Facility; and
modifications to the Second Launch Pad.
The ground communication network has been finalised, while feeder stations and terrestrial links for the Indian Data Relay Satellite System have been established. Recovery assets have been identified and a plan prepared for locating and retrieving the Crew Module and astronauts after splashdown.
International cooperation supports specific parts of the programme. ISRO is working with:
the European Space Agency on network support;
the Australian Space Agency on crew and Crew Module recovery;
France’s CNES on training flight surgeons and ground teams; and
Russia’s Roscosmos on astronaut training and selected human-spaceflight systems.
Gaganyaan Forms The Base For An Indian Space Station
The human-spaceflight programme extends beyond the first crewed mission. The Government plans to operationalise the Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035.
ISRO has designed an overall configuration comprising five modules. Development and launch of the first module, BAS-01, have received government approval, with system engineering and technology development underway across ISRO centres.
The ₹20,193 crore allocation approved in September 2024 covers eight missions under the broader Human Spaceflight Programme, linking Gaganyaan with the first stage of space-station development.
