Institutions: Ministry of Health & Family Welfare
The FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), under Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, has launched a dedicated licensing and registration window for Ayurveda Aahara products on its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal. This move enables manufacturers nationwide to apply for licenses and market regulatory compliant Ayurvedic food items.
FSSAI has also published a list of 91 approved Ayurveda Aahara recipes (via an order on 25 July 2025) to guide producers. The new “Kind of Business (KoB)” framework aligns traditional formulations from authoritative Ayurveda texts with modern food safety and quality norms.
This helps formalise and regulate the Ayurvedic foods sector, ensuring consumer safety and market access. It bridges traditional health wisdom with modern regulatory rigor, while providing clarity to industry players. It supports MoHFW’s efforts to integrate AYUSH pathways with health nutrition goals and encourages value addition in the herbal / functional food space.
What is “Kind of Business (KoB)” in FSSAI?
In the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal of FSSAI, every applicant has to select a Kind of Business (KoB) while applying for a food licence. It categorises the type of activity the business is engaged in — such as manufacturer, distributor, retailer, transporter, storage operator, or importer.
For the new Ayurveda Aahara framework, a dedicated KoB has been created so that companies producing Ayurvedic food products can apply under a specific business category, aligned with approved formulations and safety standards.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can states build capacity (labs, testing, certification) so that smaller Ayurveda food producers can comply with new norms without being excluded by cost or complexity?
