The European Parliament has reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity while urging accelerated progress on reforms essential for EU accession. In a resolution adopted with 418 votes in favour, 135 against, and 41 abstentions, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) called on the European Commission to open negotiation clusters to advance Ukraine’s EU membership bid at the fastest possible pace, subject to continued implementation of the EU’s rulebook.
Ukraine has been commended for strengthening democratic institutions but is urged to intensify judicial, rule-of-law, and anti-corruption reforms, particularly through transparent and merit-based selection processes for relevant bodies. These reforms are seen as critical not only for EU membership but also for post-war reconstruction and building economic trust. Against the backdrop of the shifting US stance under President Trump, MEPs stressed that the EU and member states must remain Ukraine’s strategic allies and reinforce their leadership role in ensuring peace, sovereignty, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can sustained judicial and anti-corruption reforms in Ukraine shape both its EU accession process and long-term post-war reconstruction outcomes?
