On 17 September 2025, the European Commission announced a new strategic agenda to elevate EU–India relations, framing the partnership around shared prosperity and security. The initiative seeks to deepen cooperation in trade, green and digital transitions, critical technologies, health security, and climate resilience, while strengthening joint efforts on global governance reforms. It underscores the EU’s recognition of India as a key partner in shaping multipolar economic and security frameworks.
The agenda signals a step change in how the EU aligns with India across strategic sectors-from sustainable infrastructure and resilient supply chains to renewable energy and digital public goods. It also complements ongoing negotiations on the EU–India Free Trade Agreement and broader dialogues on global challenges such as climate change, maritime security, and reform of multilateral institutions.
The proposed agenda highlights the EU’s intent to anchor its Indo-Pacific strategy through India, presenting opportunities for India to leverage external financing, technology transfer, and regulatory alignment to advance its own developmental priorities.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India use this agenda to secure both economic benefits and strategic autonomy, while ensuring its interests are balanced in EU regulatory and trade frameworks?
