Key Details

The partnership gives the Ministry’s research institutes a common route to offer research-based PhD programmesthrough AcSIR.

  • Scope: All ten Ministry of Earth Sciences institutes are recognised as AcSIR Associated Research Institutes.

  • How it works: Selected students will research at a host institute under MoES scientists recognised as AcSIR faculty. AcSIR will award the degree, naming the host institute on the certificate.

  • Current status: The agreement was signed on 21 August 2026 and formally announced on 13 October. All ten institutes are participating in the latest PhD enrolment cycle, with coordinators appointed at institute and ministry levels.

  • Research areas: Opportunities span weather and climate science, oceans, polar regions, earthquakes, coastal processes and related technologies.

National Laboratories Become PhD Research Sites

Earth-system research often relies on specialised observations, equipment and long-running scientific programmes. The arrangement allows doctoral scholars to work within the Ministry’s institutes while following AcSIR’s academic programme and degree process. It also gives MoES scientists a formal supervisory role.

The fields covered have practical reach: they include weather prediction and climate services, ocean observation, earthquake-hazard assessment and polar research. The release also identifies newer areas such as marine robotics and applications of artificial intelligence in earth sciences. It announces research opportunities, not findings or improved public services resulting from the partnership.

Policy Relevance

The partnership links advanced training to public research capacity: students can work on questions pursued by national laboratories, and those laboratories gain a structured doctoral programme. Participation in the current enrolment cycle shows the arrangement has moved beyond signing an agreement. Its longer-term value will be seen in the research completed, the skills developed and how effectively institutes can support scholars across these specialised fields.

Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can this partnership help India build the scientific workforce needed to turn research on weather, oceans, climate and earthquakes into better forecasts, public services and long-term planning?
