The Commonwealth Secretariat has launched a landmark Model Law on Digital Trade to harmonize trade rules across its 56 member states, including India. The law provides an easily customizable framework for governments to grant legal recognition to electronic communications, digital contracts, e-signatures, and electronic transferable records. This framework aims to replace outdated, paper-based processes with secure, faster, and cheaper digital systems. This legal equivalence is essential for modernizing trade finance and reducing the reliance on physical paper delivery, which causes significant delays and costs. Full implementation across the Commonwealth is projected to unlock nearly US$1.2 trillion in efficiency and growth gains within five years, including significant benefits for Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) by dramatically reducing transaction times and compliance costs. The Model Law is based on global standards, ensuring cross-border interoperability.
As a leading Commonwealth economy, Indiaβs swift consideration of this Model Law provides a clear pathway to align its domestic trade and MSME policies with international digital standards, boosting intra-Commonwealth trade and strengthening its position in global value chains by dramatically cutting bureaucratic friction.
