SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure | SDG 13: Climate Action
Institutions: Ministry of Steel
The AIIFA (All India Induction Furnaces Association) Steelex 2025 event, held in Mumbai, was inaugurated by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Organized by the AIIFA Sustainable Steel Manufacturers Association and supported by the Ministry of Steel and UNDP, it coincided with the 37th National Conference on Sustainable Steel. The minister emphasized that transitioning to green steel is a national priority, highlighted Maharashtra’s green hydrogen ambitions (5 lakh TPA by 2030), and announced seven MoUs worth ₹25,560 crore expected to generate 22,600 jobs. He underscored the importance of policy and industrial reforms to compete under global measures such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. The event also saw the launch of a Green Certificate to recognize decarbonisation efforts among steel firms.
By anchoring industrial growth in low-carbon transitions, this conference signals a shift in steel sector strategy-linking national steel capacity expansion with climate commitments. The MoUs and incentive frameworks unveiled here may catalyze investment and define how India aligns with global carbon regulation.
AIIFA stands for the All India Induction Furnaces Association. It is an industry body representing India’s induction furnace–based steel producers, which contribute significantly to secondary steel production. The association works with government and industry stakeholders on policies, technology upgrades, energy efficiency, and now increasingly on green steel and decarbonisation pathways.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can states and the Centre ensure that the green steel commitments (in MoUs) translate into implementation on the ground-in manufacturing, supply chains, and emissions control?
