WHO Hypertension 2025 Report - A Call to Strengthen Cardiovascular Health Systems
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being | SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
Institutions: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
The WHOβs (World Health Organization) Global Report on Hypertension 2025 stresses that hypertension remains one of the top risk factors for death and disability globally. Despite progress in some countries, many are falling short in detecting, treating, and controlling high blood pressure, particularly in their primary health care systems. The report highlights that access to affordable antihypertensive medications and validated blood pressure devices is inconsistent, and many patients are undiagnosed or untreated.
This is not just a health issue - it is a public policy and economic challenge. Uncontrolled hypertension places heavy burden on public health systems and can exacerbate inequality (those with poor access to care suffer worse outcomes). For policy stakeholders in India, this report provides a framework for strengthening preventive health care, ensuring supply chain integrity for essential medicines, and scaling up community-based screening programmes.
This report nudges to think about policy mechanisms and investment required in India to ensure universal access to hypertension screening, validated devices, and continuity of care to meet SDG health goals by 2030.
