Water Security Financing Report 2024: MDBs Committed USD 19.6 Billion to Water-related Projects
SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation | SDG 13: Climate Action
Institutions: Ministry of Jal Shakti | Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
The Water Security Financing Report 2024, jointly prepared by ten multilateral development banks (MDBs) including the New Development Bank, World Bank, and Asian Development Bank, shows that MDBs approved USD 19.6 billion for water-related projects in 2024. Of this, USD 14.4 billion went to low- and middle-income countries, highlighting the financing gap in vulnerable regions. Financing covered water supply and sanitation, irrigation, flood control, and climate-resilient infrastructure, with case studies from Egypt, the Philippines, and Cambodia. The report underscores the increasing reliance on blended finance and private sector mobilization to address water challenges under climate stress.
This annual report, compiled by ten MDBs, tracks global financing flows into water supply, sanitation, irrigation, and climate-resilient infrastructure. It provides both financing figures and project case studies, serving as a benchmark for policymakers and researchers to understand investment gaps and opportunities in water security.
The report demonstrates how MDBs are positioning water security as a central pillar of sustainable development finance. For India, as both a shareholder and one of the largest MDB borrowers, the findings are significant. MDB financing supports Indiaβs investments in irrigation, urban water management, and climate resilience, while shaping domestic policies to align with global sustainability standards.
