SDG 2: Zero Hunger | SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Institutions: Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare | Government of Uttar Pradesh | Government of Gujarat
Union Agriculture Minister has approved 100% procurement of urad (black lentils) and tur (pigeon pea) from farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat for Kharif 2025-26. Additional procurement approvals include moong, sesame, groundnut in Uttar Pradesh, and soybean, moong, groundnut in Gujarat. In total, procurement worth ₹13,890.60 crore is expected to benefit farmers in both states. The procurement process is to be fully transparent and digital, using biometric or facial authentication, Point-of-Sale (POS) machines, and running through digital portals like e-Samriddhi and e-Samyukti, with direct payments to farmers’ bank accounts.
This move strengthens India’s procurement policy by ensuring fair market access and price support for farmers, especially of pulses and oilseeds. Digital and transparent processes reduce leakages and middlemen exploitation. For states like Uttar Pradesh & Gujarat, this can stabilize incomes, support food security, and reinforce confidence in Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanisms.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
What further safeguards are needed to ensure that small and marginal farmers fully benefit from the procurement (e.g. registration, awareness, logistics), and how will implementation be monitored?
