The UNβs Annual Report 2025 underscores the Organizationβs continued role in advancing peace, humanitarian relief, and sustainable development despite mounting global challenges. In 2024, the UN mobilized $25 billion of its $50 billion appeal, reaching 116 million people across 77 countries with life-saving assistance. Humanitarian operations spanned conflict zones such as Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine, and disaster-affected regions including Vanuatu and South-East Asia. The report also recorded 2024 as the deadliest year for humanitarian workers, with 373 personnel killed, most from UNRWA in Gaza.
Peacebuilding efforts remained central, with diplomatic engagements in Syria, Lebanon, and Sudan, supported by a Peacebuilding Fund allocation of $116 million across 32 countries. A landmark outcome of the Summit of the Future was the Pact for the Future, which introduced reforms in global governance, financing, digital cooperation, and climate action. Human rights and gender equality were emphasized as cross-cutting priorities. The Secretary-General reiterated that the UNβs mission is to uphold rights, deliver development, and defend peace despite adversity.
For India, which depends on UN platforms for peacekeeping, humanitarian support, and climate cooperation, the report is a reminder of both the value and fragility of the UN system. Active engagement will be critical to ensure that multilateral reforms do not weaken services vital for the Global South.
