UIDAI Launches SITAA Scheme to Strengthen Aadhaar Face Authentication Against Deepfakes
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Institutions: UIDAI | Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY)
UIDAI has introduced the SITAA (Scheme for Innovation and Technology Association with Aadhaar) to encourage startups, academia, and industry to co-develop advanced solutions to safeguard face authentication in Aadhaar systems against deepfake manipulations, mask attacks, spoofing, and demographic bias.
Challenges under SITAA include:
Face liveness detection across demographics and devices, resisting spoof attacks.
Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) methods for robust anti-spoofing, to detect whether a biometric input (face, fingerprint) is genuine or a spoof (e.g. printed photo, replay video, mask).
Contactless fingerprint authentication using mobile cameras.
The program will be piloted in collaboration with MeitY Startup Hub and NASSCOM, who have signed an MoU with UIDAI to enable incubation, mentoring, and industry linkage support.
Securing Aadhaarβs face authentication is critical for maintaining trust in Indiaβs Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). As identity-based services expand (finance, welfare, health), safeguarding against AI-enabled attacks becomes foundational. SITAA promotes indigenisation, public-private co-development, and continuous innovation in biometric security. It also signals that privacy, fairness, and robustness must be integral to digital identity policyβnot added later.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
Can UIDAI design a governance and evaluation framework ensuring that innovations from SITAA are fair, secure, inclusive, and adaptable to emerging threats across demographics and devices?
