Demand Continued to Outpace Production

Finished steel consumption rose to 41.6 Mt, exceeding the 40.6 Mtproduced during the quarter. Imports consequently increased faster than exports, with China, Korea and Japan accounting for the largest import shares, while the UAE and Vietnam were the leading export destinations. Alloy steel performed particularly strongly, with production rising 28.2% and consumption 25.6%, indicating expanding demand for specialised steel products.


Capacity Growth Was Accompanied by Plant and Logistics Upgrades

India’s steelmaking capacity reached 222 MTPA, moving towards the 300 MTPA target for 2030. Bhilai Steel Plant initiated work to expand capacity from 7 MTPA to 10.2 MTPA, expansion and sustainability projects were reviewed at IISCO Steel Plant, and a 258-km slurry pipeline will supply around 8.3 Mt of iron ore annually to Bokaro Steel Plant, reducing dependence on rail transport.


International and Green-Steel Initiatives Broadened the Sector’s Development

SAIL and Indonesia’s PT Krakatau Steel agreed to explore a stainless-steel slab joint venture that would combine Indonesian nickel resources with Indian steelmaking expertise. Domestically, Green Steel Certificates were issued to 97 producers across 15 states, covering products including bars, coils, plates, wire rods and pipes. Most received five-star ratings, while SAIL was separately recognised for its work on decarbonisation, pollution control and waste management.


What Is Green Steel?

Under India’s Green Steel Taxonomy, green steel is defined according to the greenhouse-gas emission intensity of finished steel production. Steel produced with emissions below 2.2 tonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent per tonne of finished steel qualifies for a green rating.

The framework assigns three ratings:

  • Five-star: Below 1.6 tCO₂e per tonne of finished steel

  • Four-star: Between 1.6 and 2.0 tCO₂e

  • Three-star: Between 2.0 and 2.2 tCO₂e
