Prime Minister Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the SCO Summit in Tianjin on 31 August 2025. Both sides affirmed their status as development partners, emphasising that differences should not become disputes, and a foundation of mutual respect is essential for their peoples and regional stability.
The leaders recognised the maintenance of peace along the border since successful disengagement and supported ongoing dialogue for a fair and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue. They discussed expanding people-to-people ties via direct flights and tourist visas, as well as boosting trade and economic cooperation to stabilise world markets.
India and China agreed to expand dialogue on bilateral, regional, and global challenges within multilateral platforms, and both expressed support for each other’s leadership in the upcoming SCO and BRICS summits.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: What are the priority steps for India and China to institutionalise stable border management and strengthen economic and diplomatic cooperation within emerging multilateral frameworks?
