SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Ministry of Power | Central Electricity Authority (CEA)
The Ministry of Power has articulated a strategic vision where Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) form the backbone of Indiaβs future power distribution. Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal emphasized that these technologies are essential for building intelligent, self-optimizing grids capable of predicting outages, detecting theft, and providing appliance-level insights to consumers. The objective is to transform Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) into consumer-centric entities that leverage data for real-time decision-making, thereby reducing operational losses and restoring consumer trust.
Concurrently, the Minister launched STELLAR (Strategic Expansion for Long Term Load Adequacy and Resilience) to fortify this technological shift with robust planning. Developed by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), STELLAR is a standardized framework designed to empower DISCOMs to conduct scientific Resource Adequacy studies autonomously. By enabling precise long-term capacity planning, the tool ensures that the push for AI-driven efficiency is supported by a reliable and resilient power supply capable of meeting future demand loads.
Policy Relevance
This dual announcement marks a critical evolution in Indiaβs energy policy: shifting from purely physical infrastructure expansion to data-driven grid governance. By combining the STELLAR framework (for long-term reliability planning) with AI/ML applications (for real-time operational efficiency), the government is creating a comprehensive ecosystem to de-risk the power sector. This approach is vital for ensuring the financial viability of DISCOMs and managing the complexities of integrating renewable energy into the grid.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How will the Ministry of Power integrate the long-term capacity data generated by STELLAR with the real-time operational insights from new AI applications to create a unified, dynamic national power grid?
