The National Test House (NTH), Indiaβs institution for testing, calibration, and certification of industrial and consumer products, marked its 114th Foundation Day with a shift towards AI-driven and digital testing. NTH supports regulatory enforcement of safety standards, BIS compliance, and facilitates export competitiveness through reliable certification.
New facilities inaugurated include an Electric Vehicle Testing Lab in Kolkata, a Drone Testing Facility in Ghaziabad, and a Chemical Testing Lab in Ghaziabad. A Laboratory Data Automation System (LDAS) and a mobile app were launched to reduce manual errors, speed up processes, and make services more accessible.
NTH underpins consumer safety frameworks, industrial policy, and trade compliance, and its adoption of AI, EV, and drone testing aligns with Indiaβs push for Atmanirbhar Bharat, export readiness, and digital governance. The upgrades highlight the need for robust regulatory frameworks that ensure trust, transparency, and safety as testing expands into new high-tech domains.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India strengthen regulatory oversight to ensure AI-enabled and domain-specific testing (EVs, drones) delivers both industrial competitiveness and consumer protection?
