National Health Authority Reviews States’ Progress, Sets Next Phase for Ayushman Bharat and Digital Health Mission - Over 45 Crore Benefited
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Institutions: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare | National Health Authority
The National Health Authority (NHA) held a two-day national review meeting in Bhopal with officials from all States and Union Territories to assess how India’s flagship health schemes—Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM)—are performing on the ground. The meeting covered hospital empanelment, beneficiary outreach, faster claim processing, and the adoption of digital health records through the ABDM platform.
The NHA reported that Ayushman Bharat has already benefited over 45 crore people across India. It also released the Annual Report 2024-25 and a Compendium of Best Practices from different states, highlighting innovations that could guide the next phase—PM-JAY 2.0 and ABDM 2.0. Key priorities include building stronger digital infrastructure, ensuring data interoperability, and introducing the ABDM Index to measure states’ digital-health progress.
The review marks a policy shift from expanding coverage to improving quality, accountability, and digital readiness. Linking PM-JAY’s financial protection with ABDM’s digital backbone can create a more data-driven and equitable health system, aligning with Digital Health Mission goals and India’s roadmap for Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
What is PM-JAY? → India’s national health-insurance scheme offering free secondary and tertiary hospital care to low-income families.
What is ABDM? → The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission—a digital platform connecting citizens, hospitals, and doctors through unique Health IDs and secure electronic records.
