The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation released the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) Monthly Bulletin for August 2025 on 15 September 2025. The data shows a decline in unemployment and rising female participation in the workforce. The overall unemployment rate (15+ years) fell to 5.1% in August from 5.6% in June. Male unemployment eased to 5.0%, its lowest in five months. Female workforce indicators improved significantly: the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) among women rose to 32.0% (from 30.2% in June) and the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) climbed to 33.7% (from 32.0%). Overall WPR increased to 52.2%, reflecting a broader improvement in employment trends.
These figures indicate incremental strengthening of Indiaβs labour market, with notable gains in female participation - a critical driver of inclusive growth. For policy makers, the results highlight the need to sustain momentum by expanding skill development, improving workplace safety and childcare, and addressing barriers for women in urban and rural labour markets. Monitoring these trends monthly offers sharper tools for responsive labour and welfare policy.
