The Government of Jharkhand has announced plans to upgrade the Mega Sports Complex, Hotwar and take steps toward establishing a Sports University in Ranchi. At a high-level meeting chaired by CM Hemant Soren, officials were directed to expedite procedures for the university and modernisation works. The proposed reforms aim to provide athletes with world-class facilities, enhance training and career pathways, and bring the stateβs sports infrastructure up to international standards.
The Mega Sports Complex, which already hosts multiple stadiums and has been the venue for national and international competitions, will be audited for deficiencies, with modernization entrusted to specialized agencies. The new Sports University will function as a talent hub, while the complex upgrade is expected to spur employment, tourism, and investment in the state.
By integrating education, training, and infrastructure, Jharkhand is seeking to position itself as a national sports hub, linking athlete development with broader economic and social gains. The initiative also supports Indiaβs agenda of strengthening state-level sports ecosystems under schemes like Khelo India and aligns with long-term goals of sports-led youth empowerment.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can Jharkhand ensure that the Sports University model combines elite training with grassroots inclusion, so local athletes also benefit equitably from world-class facilities?
