SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being | SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Institutions: Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers | Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals (DCPC)
On 24 September 2025, the Institute of Pesticide Formulation Technology (IPFT) in Gurugram, under the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals (Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers), inaugurated an Analytical Skills Development Course (ASDC) in collaboration with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), The Netherlands. The course (22 September to 3 October) brings together 16 participants from 14 countries, particularly from developing and transition economies.
The ASDC curriculum includes modules on nomenclature, chemistry, decontamination of scheduled chemicals, advanced gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, sample preparation, as well as Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and OPCW proficiency testing. By doing so, the programme aims to strengthen national and global chemical safety capacity, promote the peaceful use of chemistry, and enforce compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
This training initiative is important for Indiaβs role in chemical safety, nonproliferation, and global normative systems. It enhances the countryβs institutional capacity in analytical and forensic chemistry, which has direct relevance for environmental regulation, pesticide monitoring, and chemical weapons compliance. For the DCPC and IPFT, it also helps India engage more credibly in international cooperation frameworks under the CWC and related regimes.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can India institutionalise such international training programmes across states and chemical labs to ensure consistent capacity in chemical analysis and compliance with global norms?
