Summary

The Gist: India’s Telecom Growth Is Increasingly About Digital Usage, Not Just Connectivity

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released telecom performance data for the quarter ending March 2026, showing continued expansion in internet access, broadband adoption and digital usage. The figures suggest that India’s telecom sector is gradually moving beyond basic connectivity expansion towards supporting a large-scale digital economy powered by mobile internet, digital services and data-intensive applications.

Broadband Has Become the Foundation of Internet Access

India’s internet subscriber base crossed 1.09 billion, with broadband connections accounting for more than 1.06 billion subscriptions. Internet subscriptions grew by 6.24% during the quarter, indicating continued demand for higher-speed connectivity across households, businesses and public services.

The data highlights the extent to which broadband—particularly wireless broadband—has become the primary gateway to digital participation in India.

Rural Connectivity Is Improving, but the Digital Divide Persists

Rural telecom subscriptions reached 551.8 million, supported by continued growth in internet adoption. However, connectivity remains uneven. Rural tele-density stands at 60.46%, compared to more than 150% in urban areas, indicating that significant disparities in access continue to persist.

The figures reinforce the importance of expanding last-mile infrastructure and improving the quality of connectivity in underserved regions.

Mobile Networks Are Carrying India’s Digital Economy

India’s digital ecosystem remains overwhelmingly mobile-led. Average monthly wireless data consumption increased to 26.7 GB per subscriber, while total wireless data traffic reached 77,953 petabytes during the quarter.

The scale of data consumption reflects the growing role of mobile networks in supporting digital payments, e-commerce, education, entertainment, telemedicine and government services.

Telecom Infrastructure Continues to Diversify

Alongside mobile connectivity, supporting digital infrastructure is also expanding. Public Wi-Fi hotspots crossed 56,000, while wireline broadband and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) deployments continued to grow.

These developments indicate a gradual shift towards a more diversified connectivity ecosystem capable of supporting households, enterprises and public institutions.

What is Tele-density?

Tele-density measures the number of telephone or mobile connections per 100 people. It is commonly used as an indicator of access to communication infrastructure and helps assess the reach of telecom services across different regions.

Policy Relevance

  • Highlights India’s transition from connectivity expansion to digital economy infrastructure, with broadband and mobile networks increasingly underpinning public services, commerce and digital governance.

  • Reinforces the need to close the rural digital divide, as large gaps remain between urban and rural tele-density levels.

  • Strengthens the case for continued investment in broadband capacity, given rapidly rising data consumption and growing demand for digital services.

  • Demonstrates the central role of mobile broadband in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure ecosystem, supporting everything from UPI payments to online public services.

  • Signals growing opportunities for public Wi-Fi, wireline broadband and Fixed Wireless Access, helping diversify connectivity options beyond mobile networks.

  • Positions telecom infrastructure as a foundational enabler of Digital India, AI adoption, e-governance and future digital growth.
