Railway Ticketing Infrastructure Is Being Rebuilt for Digital Demand
The Passenger Reservation System manages reserved-ticket bookings, cancellations, seat allocation, waitlists, RAC status and reservation charts across Indian Railways. IRCTC’s website and applications provide the passenger-facing interface, while PRS performs the underlying reservation functions.
Between June 2025 and June 2026, passengers booked 65.08 crore reserved tickets, of which 57.90 crore were purchased online. The system now serves more than 20.5 lakh passengers daily, while approximately 73% of transactions are cashless.
The existing technological platform was deployed in 2010, before online reservations reached their present scale. The new system is intended to handle nearly five times as many bookings and ten times as many enquiries per minute, particularly improving its ability to manage Tatkal and other peak-period demand.
Booking Reforms Address Speed and Fairness
The infrastructure upgrade is being accompanied by changes to the reservation process:
The Advance Reservation Period has been reduced from 120 to 60 days.
Aadhaar authentication has been introduced for Tatkal booking.
OTP verification has been added to deter bots and unauthorised agents.
A redesigned IRCTC website reduces booking steps and displays availability across classes.
RailOne, launched in July 2025, combines ticketing and other railway services in a single application. It has recorded more than 4.55 crore downloads and facilitates around 9.65 lakh bookings daily.
The application also offers AI-based waitlist-confirmation predictions. Indian Railways reports that prediction accuracy has increased from 53% to 94%, although the release does not provide the methodology or evaluation period behind this figure.
Performance Will Depend on the Passenger Experience
The new capacity figures are technical targets. The practical test will be whether the upgrade reduces failed logins, payment errors, outages, booking delays and refund problems during periods of heavy demand.
Fair access will also depend on whether Aadhaar and OTP requirements effectively restrict automated bookings without creating difficulties for genuine passengers. Counter booking and assisted access remain necessary for travellers who lack reliable connectivity, digital-payment access or confidence using online services.
