The Ministry of Tourism released the 66th India Tourism Data Compendium (2025 edition), providing a detailed snapshot of domestic and international tourism trends. In 2024, India registered 20.57 million international tourist arrivals (ITAs), including 9.95 million foreign tourists and 10.62 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Tourism receipts rose to USD 35.02 billion (₹2,93,033 crore), giving India a 2.02% share of global tourism receipts and ranking 15th worldwide.
Domestic tourism remained the backbone of the sector, with 2,948 million visits in 2024, a 17.5% increase over 2023. Uttar Pradesh led with 647 million visits, followed by Tamil Nadu with 307 million. The Taj Mahal remained the top monument, drawing 6.26 million domestic and 0.65 million foreign visitors in FY 2024–25.
The report also highlights average tourist stays (18.1 days), source markets (USA, Bangladesh, UK, Australia, Canada), and purposes of travel (leisure 45%, diaspora 28%, business 11%, medical 6.5%). Tourism directly and indirectly supported 84.6 million jobs and contributed 5.22% to India’s GDP.
These trends emphasise the dual challenge for India: scaling international arrivals while strengthening domestic circuits. The data provides an evidence base for Swadesh Darshan 2.0, SASCI, and PM Vishwakarma-linked heritage tourism, aligning with Vikas + Virasat and SDG commitments.
What is the India Tourism Data Compendium? → An annual publication of the Ministry of Tourism compiling national and international statistics on arrivals, receipts, domestic visits, employment, and heritage sites, serving as India’s reference dataset for tourism planning and policy.
