Innovation Extended Beyond Loom Modernisation
Handloom Hackathon 2.0 brought students, researchers, startups and handloom specialists together to develop technology-based responses to challenges facing India’s weaving sector. The selected solutions addressed more than improvements to weaving equipment. They covered weaver livelihoods, financial inclusion, digital market access, sustainable dyeing, production monitoring and design development.
This range reflects the challenges identified by the hackathon: improving productivity while also strengthening sustainability, market competitiveness and the economic position of weavers.
Government-Academia Partnerships Anchored the Initiative
The hackathon connected the Ministry of Textiles, IIT Delhi, engineering institutions, Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology, universities and startups. The Ministry also emphasised partnerships with IITs and NIFTs for developing technologies that reduce manual effort and introduce greater scientific precision into traditional weaving processes.
The proposed Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology at IIT Delhi is intended to extend this institutional collaboration through work on technology integration, standardisation and productivity while preserving the distinctiveness of handcrafted textiles.
Technology Was Linked to Weaver Livelihoods and Market Access
The winning entries included AI-enabled livelihood platforms and digital tools intended to improve market access. The Ministry also highlighted the Indian Handmade Portal, through which weavers can display and sell their products without third-party intermediaries.
The release therefore connects production-side technologies with digital channels intended to give weavers wider and more direct access to buyers. It presents both as parts of the effort to strengthen handloom livelihoods and competitiveness, although it does not report their realised impact.

Weaver-Centred Development: Solutions should be designed and field-tested with weavers across different regions, loom types, production systems, languages and levels of digital access.
