According to Eurostat, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area was 6.2 % in July 2025, down from 6.3 % in June and from 6.4 % a year earlier. The European Union (EU) average stood at 5.9 %.
In that month, about 10.805 million people in the euro area and 13.025 million across the EU were unemployed. Youth (under 25) unemployment in the euro area dropped to 13.9 %, from 14.3 % in June.
Other markers of labour activity in the EU in Q2 2025:
The employment rate (ages 20-64) rose to 76.2 %, up from 76.1 % in Q1.
Labour market slack (i.e., underemployment + people wanting work but not actively seeking) was estimated at 11.7 % of the extended workforce.
Between Q1 and Q2, 3.1 million unemployed people found jobs, 6.8 million remained unemployed, and 3.2 million moved out of the labour force entirely.
These data suggest that despite slower growth in parts of Europe, labour demand remains firm and unemployment is relatively stable.
For India, the Eurozoneβs current labour dynamics offer useful contrasts and cautionary lessons:
Even in advanced economies, labour markets are sticky; cyclical stress or shocks can take time to affect employment
Youth unemployment continues to be far higher than overall unemployment, highlighting structural challenges in job markets
Indiaβs own ambitions for job creation (especially in formal sectors) under schemes like PM GatiShakti, National Infrastructure Pipeline, and Make in India must account for structural rigidities, skill mismatches, and regional differences
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
What specific structural reforms and skill alignment mechanisms must India implement to ensure high rates of youth unemployment seen in the Eurozone do not undermine formal job creation targets under schemes like Make in India and PM GatiShakti?
