Development of Flexible, Safe, and Eco-Friendly Aluminum-Ion Battery by Indian Scientists
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Institutions: Ministry of Science and Technology
Scientists from Bengaluruβs Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences and the Indian Institute of Science have developed a novel flexible aluminum-ion battery that offers a safer alternative to lithium-ion batteries commonly used in electronics and electric vehicles. The battery is made using abundant aluminum and a water-based solution, making it environmentally friendly and less prone to hazards like overheating and explosion.
The battery maintains 96.77% of its capacity after 150 charge-discharge cycles and remains functional even when bent or folded, demonstrating potential applications in flexible electronics and wearable devices. Advanced microscopic and spectroscopic techniques ensured optimized battery performance and durability.
This innovation positions India at the forefront of sustainable energy storage, supporting broader environmental goals and advancing multivalent ion battery technology.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India leverage this flexible aluminum-ion battery technology to scale up sustainable and safe energy storage solutions for commercial and consumer applications?
