CII’s 20th Global Sustainability Summit: India Showcases Sustainable Leadership - Renewable Energy Gains and Climate Governance Reforms
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy | SDG 13: Climate Action
Institution: Ministry of Commerce & Industry | Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
At the CII’s 20th Global Sustainability Summit, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted India’s progress as a standout performer among G20 nations in meeting sustainability commitments. He noted that 50% of India’s installed energy capacity now comes from renewables and underscored India’s ambition to reach 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. Thanks to transparent auction processes, solar power tariffs have plummeted from ₹7–8 per kWh to as low as ₹2.41, enabling round-the-clock clean energy supply at globally unmatched rates of ₹4.60–5.00 per kWh. Goyal emphasized the principle of “Zero Defect, Zero Effect” as a guiding ethos that ties quality with sustainability across Indian industry and infrastructure.
In the same summit, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced key environmental governance reforms. He introduced the Environment Audit Rules 2025, establishing a two-tier audit framework and a dedicated regulator to enhance transparency in environmental compliance. The Green Credit Programme has been strengthened with new methodologies that invite private sector participation and uphold restoration commitments via Earned Green Credits. Amendments to the Forest (Conservation and Augmentation) Rules, 2023 were also notified to simplify approvals for critical mineral mining under the National Critical Mineral Mission, supporting strategic self-reliance.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India scale its renewable energy progress alongside institutional reforms like environmental auditing and green credit systems to accelerate inclusive, sustainable growth?
