The 2025 Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report shows that global gas flaring rose to 151 billion cubic meters in 2024, up from 148 bcm in 2023, making it the highest level since 2007. The flaring generated 389 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent, including 46 Mt of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
The report reveals that the top nine flaring countries, though responsible for nearly 75 percent of flared gas, produce less than half of global oil. Flaring intensity gas flared per barrel of oil has remained largely unchanged over the past fifteen years. Capturing the flared gas could meet energy needs equivalent to Africa’s entire annual gas consumption, highlighting the enormous waste and missed opportunity.
To reverse these trends, the report urges governments and industry to accelerate implementation of the Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative, invest in infrastructure to utilize associated gas, and establish strong regulatory frameworks and incentives. Without rapid global and multilateral action, persistent methane and CO₂ emissions from flaring will hamper climate goals and threaten energy access.
