Institutions: Ministry of Jal Shakti
The Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation (DDWS) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti convened a virtual workshop on “Greywater Management & Reuse” on 22 September 2025. This is part of the lead-up to the Sujalam Bharat Summit scheduled for November, aimed at integrating grassroots water management into national policy. Participants included state mission directors, panchayat leaders, engineers, and civil society actors, who shared case studies and community-led innovations from states like Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Haryana. The workshop underscored that effective greywater systems could reduce freshwater demand by 30–40%, a gain significant for urban resilience and rural water security.
By foregrounding greywater reuse in national discourse, the government is signalling a shift toward circular water systems rather than purely supply-side expansion. The practical models and insights from this workshop can inform state-level programs under Jal Jeevan Mission and water budgets. As these ideas scale, alignment of institutional responsibilities, financing, and local capacity will determine whether reuse becomes part of mainstream water policy.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can states institutionalize greywater reuse norms, ensure monitoring, and integrate them into municipal/Gram Panchayat water planning frameworks?
