SDG 4: Quality Education | SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

The White House has published stark results from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), commonly known as the "Nationβs Report Card." The data reveals alarming declines: only 31% of eighth graders are proficient in science, while among high school seniors, proficiency stands at just 22% in math, the lowest since assessments began and 35% in reading, the lowest on record. Despite over $3 trillion in federal K-12 spending since 1979 and a 245% increase in per-pupil expenditure, student performance has stagnated, positioning U.S. students near the bottom among advanced economies in key subjects.
The White House attributes this outcome to systemic failure and proposes devolution of education responsibilities to states and expansion of parental choice. These findings amplify the urgency for education reform, targeting learning loss, resource allocation, and instructional quality to reverse decades of underperformance.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: Can India mitigate its emerging learning loss by empowering states with tailored education policies, stronger accountability mechanisms, and localized governance while ensuring equity across diverse socioeconomic contexts?
