The United Nations General Assembly has approved the establishment of two global mechanisms to advance cooperation on artificial intelligence governance. The decision, welcomed by UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres, creates an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and a Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
The Scientific Panel, comprising global experts, will provide evidence-based assessments and annual reports on AI technologies and their implications for humanity. Its findings are expected to guide policymaking across member states. The Global Dialogue will serve as a regular platform for governments, industry, and civil society to discuss the opportunities and risks of AI, with alternating sessions in Geneva and New York.
These mechanisms are part of the UNβs broader push for a Global Digital Compact, seeking to ensure AI is aligned with human rights, development priorities, and equitable global access. For India, the frameworks offer an avenue to shape international AI standards while advancing its domestic agenda on innovation, digital economy, and ethical AI deployment.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India leverage the new UN frameworks on AI governance to align domestic innovation policy with global norms while safeguarding developmental and ethical priorities?
