UNDP: Sustainable Energy Seen as Key Opportunity in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Settings
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Institutions: Ministry of New and Renewable Energy; Ministry of Power
According to UNDP, sustainable energy is not only vital for climate and development goals but also a major opportunity in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Nearly 730 million people still lack electricity worldwide, with half of them living in countries impacted by conflict or fragility. Energy access in these contexts can catalyse essential services, from health and education to livelihoods, while supporting stability and peacebuilding.
UNDP highlights that renewable energy solutions - such as solar mini-grids and clean cooking systems - are often more adaptable and resilient in disrupted environments compared to conventional infrastructure. Expanding access reduces dependence on costly fossil fuel imports and diesel generators, while helping communities rebuild with greater self-reliance.
The agency stresses that inclusive approaches are critical: energy programmes must be designed to reach displaced people, women, and marginalised groups to ensure equitable benefits. Partnerships among governments, humanitarian agencies, private sector, and local communities are viewed as central to scaling impact.
