UN Tourism and E1 Series Partner to Advance Sustainable Mobility and Sports Tourism
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Institutions: Ministry of Tourism; Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways
UN Tourism and the E1 Series -the world’s first all-electric raceboat championship - have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote sustainable mobility and tourism through sport. The agreement was formalized during the Monaco race, underscoring both organizations’ dedication to advancing clean marine transport technologies and sustainable sports tourism. E1 founder Alejandro Agag was appointed UN Tourism Special Ambassador for Sport.
The partnership aims to harness the popularity of electric marine racing to deliver striking experiences while raising public awareness of marine conservation in iconic coastal cities such as Jeddah, Doha, Dubrovnik, Lagos, and Miami. UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the “immense potential for sustainable development, economic growth, and cultural exchange” at the intersection of sports and tourism.
E1’s global reach and technological platform will be leveraged to promote marine ecosystem protection, clean transport innovation, and sustainable tourism practices. Sports tourism, valued at approximately USD 685 billion in 2024 and growing at 17.5 percent annually, represents a dynamic conduit for this sustainable development approach.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India integrate electric-marine-sports tourism into its coastal development strategy to promote sustainable mobility, marine conservation, and economic growth through cultural and sporting events?
