The UN General Assembly has adopted, without a vote, a resolution introduced by Russia endorsing the Secretary-Generalβs UN80 Initiative aimed at strengthening the United Nations to meet contemporary challenges. The resolution welcomes efforts to improve operational efficiency, align reforms across UN entities, and ensure mandate delivery with agility, responsiveness and reduced duplication. Member States are placed at the centre of the reform process, which the resolution stresses must be inclusive and transparent.
The UN80 Initiative, launched in March, focuses on three priorities: enhancing efficiency, assessing how Member State mandates are implemented, and exploring structural reforms. While many delegations supported reform, the European Union, CANZ group, and others argued that the process was prematurely advanced and lacked adequate consultations. Japan and Russia, however, underlined the urgency of revitalising multilateralism and the need for shared responsibility.
Russia emphasised that the resolution reflected wide consultations and safeguards Member Statesβ leadership while respecting the Secretary-Generalβs role under the UN Charter.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India balance its support for UN reform with concerns about timing and inclusiveness raised by like-minded states?
