The SOFI 2025 report shows that global hunger affected 8.2% of the population (673 million) in 2024, a slight improvement over 2023 but still above pre-COVID-19 levels, underscoring an incomplete recovery. Projections indicate that by 2030, 512 million people may remain chronically undernourished, with Africa accounting for nearly 60%. Globally, 2.3 billion people face moderate or severe food insecurity, though the number unable to afford a healthy diet declined slightly to 2.6 billion.
Regionally, Asia leads with 323 million undernourished, followed by Africa (307 million) and Latin America & the Caribbean (34 million). In India, around 12% of the population (172 million) remains undernourished despite progress since 2006. Rising food costs mean that 42.9% of Indians cannot afford a healthy diet. India faces a double burden of malnutritionβwith 71.4 million obese adults and 4.2 million overweight children, alongside high child wasting (18.7%) and stunting (37.4 million children). Additionally, 53.7% of women aged 15β49 suffer from anaemia, placing India fourth globally.
