Textiles Ministry Launches Swadeshi Campaign to Spur Domestic Demand for Handloom & Crafts
SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth | SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production
Institutions: Ministry of Textiles | Ministry of Commerce & Industry
On 04 October 2025, the Ministry of Textiles launched a Swadeshi Campaign to promote Indian handloom, handicrafts, and textile products, aiming to reignite domestic consumption.
The campaign will run across India for 6 to 9 months, targeting urban millennials and Gen Z to reposition Indian textiles as symbols of pride, style, heritage, and to increase sales among youth and urban consumers.
It aims to empower weavers, artisans, and textile MSMEs by expanding their market access and visibility. institutional procurement will be encouraged: ministries, PSUs, and educational institutions will be asked to adopt Indian-made textiles in uniforms, furnishings, etc.
Indian textile market size in 2024 is estimated at USD 179 billion, growing ~7 % annually. The household sector contributes 58 % of domestic consumption (growing at ~8.19 % CAGR), while non-household consumption makes up ~21 %. The ministry projects that domestic demand could grow to USD 250 billion by 2030 under this push.
What is the Swadeshi Campaign? β A national initiative led by the Ministry of Textiles aimed at boosting demand for domestic handloom, handicraft, and textile products through awareness campaigns, institutional procurement, and targeted outreach. It matters because it helps strengthen local value chains, reduce import dependence, and increase incomes in artisan communities.
The campaign represents a demand-side complement to supply-side initiatives like PLI for Textiles, PM MITRA Parks, and the One District One Product (ODOP) programme. By tying procurement with demand generation and cultural branding, the government seeks to create sustainable markets for artisans and textile MSMEs.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can state governments align with the Swadeshi Campaign to ensure procurement, branding, and retail access converge so that artisans in smaller districts benefit, not only those in metro areas?
