NITI Aayog: India Electric Mobility Index 2024: Tracking Electric Mobility Trends in Indian States
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Institutions: Ministry of Power; Ministry of Road Transport & Highways; Ministry of Heavy Industries
The India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) evaluates the progress of 28 states and 8 union territories across three dimensions: transport electrification progress, charging infrastructure readiness, and EV research and innovation. Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh emerge as frontrunners, demonstrating strong performance across these themes, while Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana are recognized as performers, and several others, including Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, fall into the βaspirantβ category.
EV adoption is accelerating, with EV sales reaching 7.7% of new vehicle registrations by 2024, totaling over 6.5 million EVs on the road. However, charging infrastructure remains uneven; Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Delhi lead in public charging availability, whereas fast-charging options and grid integration remain limited. The report underscores the crucial role of coordinated state-level policy actions, such as consistent EV policies, incentives, infrastructure support, and R&D promotion, in shaping outcomes.
The IEMI, built on transparent scoring methodologies using 16 indicators across three themes, serves as a dynamic benchmarking tool to catalyze peer learning, attract investment, and guide evidence-based, inclusive electric mobility policy design across the country.
