MoSPI: Nutritional Intake in India (Household Consumption Expenditure Survey: 2022–23 & 2023–24)
SDG 2: Zero Hunger
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
Institutions: Ministry of Health & Family Welfare; Ministry of Consumer Affairs
This report presents per capita and per consumer unit daily intake of calories, protein, and fat in India for 2022–23 and 2023–24, derived from the latest two years of household consumption data. Daily calorie intake remained largely stable: rural India averaged 2,233 kcal in 2022–23 and 2,212 kcal in 2023–24; urban India averaged 2,250 kcal and 2,240 kcal respectively; similar consistency was observed in protein and fat intake. Notably, calorie intake improved among the poorest five expenditure classes in rural areas and the poorest six in urban areas.
Calorie intake correlates positively with monthly per capita consumption expenditure. Protein sources shifted modestly over time: cereals’ share declined, while contributions from eggs, meat/fish, and other foods increased. Adjusted nutrient intake figures, accounting for shared and cooked meals, are slightly below unadjusted estimates.
