The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has released the annual report Road Accidents in India 2023. The report provides a comprehensive account of traffic accidents across the country, covering fatalities, injuries, vehicle types involved, road categories, and state-wise performance. It records over 1.68 lakh fatalities in 2023, with two-wheelers accounting for the largest share of accidents, followed by cars and trucks. National Highways, though only 2% of the road length, contributed disproportionately to total accidents and deaths.
Beyond accident counts, the report tracks demographic trends, highlighting that the 18β45 age group remains most affected, and notes patterns by time of day, cause (overspeeding, dangerous driving, etc.), and enforcement levels. These insights are intended to guide evidence-based policymaking on road safety, enforcement, and infrastructure improvements.
The data provides a critical evidence base for researchers, policymakers, and planners working on transport safety, urban design, and public health interventions.
