SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Institutions: Ministry of Labour & Employment
The Ministry of Labour & Employment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zepto to integrate 10,000 gig job postings into the National Career Service (NCS) portal. This initiative links platform economy roles with Indiaβs formal employment system, aiming to bring youth and gig workers into structured job pathways. Since inception, the NCS portal has facilitated nearly 7.5 crore vacancies. Similar partnerships with Amazon, Swiggy, Rapido, and Quikr mobilised about 5 lakh vacancies over the past year. The MoU also seeks to connect gig workers to social security coverage, e-Shram registration, and upskilling opportunities, expanding institutional support for platform-based employment.
The move reflects a push to formalise gig and platform-economy work, aligning it with labour market reforms and digital employment infrastructure. This integration is significant in reducing job market fragmentation, enabling registry-based oversight of gig roles, and ensuring workers in emerging employment models gain access to welfare and protection schemes.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can India strengthen safeguards so that gig jobs integrated into NCS ensure decent work standards while maintaining private sector participation?
