Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Sanctions 1.41 Lakh Additional Houses Under PMAY-U 2.0
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities | SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
Institutions: Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA)
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has sanctioned an additional 1.41 lakh (1,40,942) houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0). This decision brings the total sanctions under PMAY-U 2.0 to over 10 lakh across 14 States/UTs.
Secretary, MoHUA, directed States/UTs to focus not just on construction, but on accelerating occupancy by ensuring adequate infrastructure, roads, public transportation, and connectivity are in place. The scheme promotes inclusivity, with 76,976 houses sanctioned for women alone in this round. Furthermore, 13,509 houses were sanctioned for Senior Citizens and 7 houses for Transgenders, underscoring the priority given to vulnerable sections. States were also advised to organize loan melas to provide financial support to beneficiaries and encourage fast-tracking the completion of houses.
The directive shift from simply sanctioning units to mandating accelerated occupancy, robust infrastructure, and prioritizing financial inclusion (loan melas) demonstrates a policy focus on enhancing the quality of urban living and equitable social development, rather than just housing stock quantity.
What is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0)? → It is a revamped scheme launched in September 2024 to provide financial support up to ₹2.50 lakh to an additional 1 crore poor and middle-class families (with annual incomes up to ₹9 lakh) who do not own a pucca house in urban areas.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: What monitoring and penalty mechanisms will MoHUA implement to enforce mandatory infrastructure and connectivity standards for PMAY-U 2.0 projects?
