IOM and Muslim Charity Launch US $1 Million Islamic Philanthropy Fund to Combat Trafficking
SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Institutions: Ministry of Home Affairs; Ministry of Women and Child Development
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Muslim Charity signed a memorandum of understanding under which Muslim Charity contributes US $1 million to IOMβs Islamic Philanthropy Fund to combat human trafficking and modern slavery. This marks the first formal partnership for the Fund, established earlier in 2025 to harness faith-based giving aligned with Islamic principles such as zakat, sadaqah, and riqab. The Fund operates on a full zakat-distribution model to ensure accountability and direct benefit to survivors and vulnerable communities.
The initiative unites IOMβs global expertise in humanitarian and protection responses with Muslim Charityβs capacity in delivering emergency aid and development. It prioritizes preventing trafficking, supporting survivors, and delivering community-based interventions. A key focus is strengthening IOMβs efforts in high-risk environments, including in Afghanistan, where funds will support community resilience and essential services for displaced and returnee populations.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India leverage partnerships with faith-based organizations to strengthen anti-trafficking interventions and support survivor protection through community-centric, values-driven philanthropy?
