India has crossed 56.7 lakh registered electric vehicles, marking rapid progress in its shift to green mobility. Flagship programmes such as FAME-II, PM E-Drive, and PM e-Bus Sewa are incentivising adoption across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, and buses. The Production Linked Incentive schemes for automobiles, components, and advanced chemistry cell batteries are driving domestic manufacturing, with 40–50 GWh capacity already awarded and localisation thresholds rising from 25 to 50 percent.
Charging infrastructure is expanding at pace, with nearly 9,000 public charging stations installed by mid-2025. NITI Aayog’s new EV Index benchmarks states on readiness, with Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh identified as frontrunners. These interventions collectively advance India’s climate targets—30 percent EV penetration by 2030, a 1 billion-tonne cut in carbon emissions, and net-zero by 2070.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India’s EV policy mix balance rapid adoption with long-term localisation and supply chain resilience?
