SDG 2: Zero Hunger
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Institutions: Ministry of Consumer Affairs
The Government of India and the World Food Programme (WFP) signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to strengthen global efforts against hunger. Under the initiative, the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) will supply fortified rice from India to meet the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations in crisis-affected regions worldwide. This partnership reflects promoting humanitarian support as a key element of its foreign policy and global engagement strategy.
The collaboration builds on previous initiatives, including Supply Chain Optimization, Fortified Rice Rollout, Annapurti Devices (Grain ATMs), Jan Poshan Kendra, Smart Warehousing, and Flospans (Mobile Storage Units). Officials from DFPD, Food Corporation of India, and WFP participated in discussions on expanding future cooperation and ensuring a reliable supply chain for humanitarian distribution. The initiative demonstrates policy implementation at the intersection of domestic agriculture, nutrition, and international humanitarian diplomacy.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders:
To what extent can such partnerships absorb the tariff shocks under Trump 2.0?
