India Opens First Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility for Mobile Devices in Noida
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure Institution: Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s first tempered glass manufacturing facility for mobile devices in Noida, established by Optiemus Electronics in partnership with Corning Inc. (USA). The facility will produce high-quality cover glass, branded as “Engineered by Corning,” for mobile phones.
The launch marks a significant step toward building a complete electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India. The Minister highlighted that nearly every major mobile phone component, from chips to cover glass and server parts will soon be manufactured domestically. This development aligns with the government’s larger Make in India and Digital India vision, aimed at enhancing self-reliance in critical technologies.
India’s electronics sector has expanded rapidly, reaching a production value of ₹11.5 lakh crore, with exports of ₹3 lakh crore and the creation of 2.5 million jobs in the past 11 years. The Noida facility reflects growing foreign and domestic collaboration, while positioning India as a competitive hub for high-value electronics manufacturing and exports.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: What policy measures can strengthen India’s electronics value chain beyond assembly, enabling domestic leadership in advanced components like semiconductors and specialty glass?
