SDG 14: Life Below Water | SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

The Indian Navy’s INS Sahyadri, an indigenously built Shivalik-class guided-missile frigate, participated in the sea phase of JAIMEX-2025 from 16-18 October and then made a port call at Yokosuka, Japan on 21 October for the harbour phase. The drills, executed jointly with the Japan Maritime Self‑Defense Force (JMSDF) ships Asahi, Oumi and submarine Jinryu, included advanced anti-submarine warfare, missile defence, flying operations and underway replenishment. JAIMEX-2025 underscores the deepening “Special Strategic & Global Partnership” between India and Japan, established in 2014.
For India, JAIMEX-2025 demonstrates a strategic approach to maritime diplomacy and regional security, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region, where free and open sea-lines remain critical. The exercise supports India’s broader naval modernisation, indigenous defence-manufacturing push, and multilateral partnerships. It also signals to allies and partners India’s readiness to engage in high-end maritime cooperation beyond littoral patrols.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How will India translate high-end maritime drills like JAIMEX into sustained capability development, continuous joint operations, and regional security frameworks that enhance its role as a net security provider in the Indo-Pacific?
