ILO Drives SDG 8 Review at HLPF 2025, Spotlighting Decent Work as a Development Accelerator
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Institutions: Ministry of Labour & Employment
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is playing a central role in the 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), particularly in the thematic review of SDG 8 - promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. In early 2025, ILO, in collaboration with UN DESA and the broader UN system, contributed to Expert Group Meetings focused on SDG 8 and its interlinkages with other SDGs. These meetings helped shape the substantive review guiding HLPF discussions.
Central to this engagement is the ILO-led Global Coalition for Social Justice, which brings together over 320 partners - including UN agencies and international bodies - to bolster multilateral cooperation and accelerate SDG progress.
By anchoring decent work as both a development objective and a policy lever, ILO underscores SDG 8βs transformative potential across the agenda - integrating social protection, labour rights, and inclusive growth into collective action.
Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can India institutionalize tripartite engagement - mirroring ILOβs coalitions - within its national SDG implementation processes to accelerate progress on decent work, inclusive growth, and labour rights ahead of its next VNR cycle?
