The Government of India has updated the IT Rules, 2021, that decide how online platforms — such as social media companies — must act when they are told to remove unlawful content. These changes apply from 15 November 2025.
The updated rules make three important improvements:
First, any order asking an online platform to take down content must now be approved by a senior government officer. Second, these orders must explain clearly why a post is considered unlawful and exactly which post must be removed. Third, the government will carry out a monthly review of all takedown directions to make sure they are being used fairly and responsibly. The goal is to make decisions clearer, reduce arbitrary or vague requests, and build trust in how India manages harmful or illegal content online.
By improving transparency, accountability and review, the amendment strengthens India’s online governance framework and public trust in regulatory decisions. It seeks to maintain a safer digital environment, particularly against misinformation, fraud, and threats to public order, without compromising fairness or due process.
What are the IT Rules, 2021? → The IT Rules set duties for online platforms to protect users, act on lawful orders, and support safe digital participation under India’s Information Technology Act, 2000.
