The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out several key reforms to improve user experience and operational efficiency. Members can now access “Passbook Lite” via the Member Portal to view summarized PF contributions, balances, withdrawals, and advances without needing to log into the separate Passbook Portal. The reform consolidates all PF services under a single login, simplifying access and reducing system congestion. EPFO will also enable direct download of Annexure K (Transfer Certificate), giving contributors visibility into PF transfers, status, and confirmation of balance/service period updates-strengthening transparency in mobility across employers.
To speed up processing of claims, settlements, transfers, refunds, and interest adjustments, EPFO is also delayering its approval hierarchy: powers previously reserved for senior officers (RPFC or Officer-in-Charge) are being decentralized to Assistant PF Commissioners and subordinate officers. This rationalization aims to reduce delays, improve accountability at field offices, and shorten claim settlement timelines.
These reforms mark a digital-first shift in India’s statutory social security architecture, by simplifying access and reducing bureaucratic chokepoints, EPFO can improve trust, reduce grievances, and increase member retention. More efficient PF administration supports broader goals of formalisation and worker welfare.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can EPFO ensure that these digital and administrative changes are sustained at scale-especially in smaller districts-with robust grievance redressal, capacity building, and system resilience to prevent exclusion?
