Consumer Affairs Launches Logo Competition to Advance Repairability Index Framework

Institutions: Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution
The Department of Consumer Affairs, together with the MyGov platform and the Chair on Consumer Law at National Law University Delhi, has launched a national logo-design competition to support the roll-out of the “Right to Repair through Repairability Index (RI) Framework”. The framework is designed to empower consumers with transparent repair options, reduce e-waste, promote responsible consumption and integrate circular economy principles.
Key features include:
The RI will cover sectors such as farming equipment, mobile phones & tablets, consumer durables, automobiles and automobile equipment.
The framework identifies six core parameters for assessment (e.g., depth of disassembly, availability of spare parts, software updates) and proposes that OEMs self-declare the RI score which will be displayed at point of sale, online platforms and via QR-code on packaging.
The competition invites Indian citizens aged 16 years and above to submit original designs by 30 November 2025, with the winning logo to be officially adopted and awarded ₹25,000 prize.
The launch of this competition signals the government’s push to operationalise the RI framework as part of its long-term strategy to embed repair rights, lengthen product lifecycles, and reduce e-waste.
This initiative aligns with India’s sustainable consumption agenda under the National Action Plan for Circular Economy and reinforces the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) mission, strengthening consumer empowerment and manufacturing transparency across the value chain.
What is the Repairability Index (RI) Framework?→ It is a proposed consumer-product labelling and assessment scheme whereby manufacturers rate how easily a product can be repaired—based on criteria such as availability of spare parts, software update support and disassembly depth—and display that rating to inform consumer choice and support the circular economy.
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How will India ensure that the RI framework translates into measurable reductions in e-waste and extends product life-cycles across diverse manufacturing sectors?
